WHAT IS ALS?

ALS is a disease of parts of the nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. In ALS these nerve cells that control muscle cells are gradually lost. In most cases, the cause is unknown. As these motor neurons are lost, the muscles they control become weak and then nonfunctional. Eventually, the person with ALS is paralyzed. ALS usually progresses rapidly with 3 to 5-year average survival.

WHAT IS "Access Hollywood Calls it a Day?"

This year, Access Hollywood host Nancy O'Dell lost her mother to ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In order to find a cure for this disease, Nancy formed "Access Hollywood Calls it a Day at 20k" to raise much needed funds for ALS Research. On September 13th, 2008 at UCLA's Drake Stadium, the ALS Community will come together to fight back against ALS at MDA's "Stride and Ride."
